The History

The Wombwell Arms was constructed around 1620 as a granary, probably using stone from nearby
Byland Abbey. The historic building became an ale house in about 1645; a relaxed friendly
atmosphere is guaranteed with stone flagged floors, beamed ceilings and a log fire.

A building with years of history

Originally called The Stapylton Arms after the Stapylton family who owned the village of Wass, the name was changed to The Wombwell Arms in 1896 when the village was purchased by Sir George Wombwell of Newburgh Priory near Coxwold. Sir George was a member of the same family that owned land near Barnsley in South Yorkshire on which the town of Wombwell is now built.

In 1924 the village, including The Wombwell Arms, was sold in various lots at auction. Ownership of The Wombwell Arms then passed to Russells brewery
of Malton and subsequently to Camerons of Hartlepool. In 1987 the freehold
of The Wombwell Arms was sold off by Camerons and the pub remains
a freehouse to this day.
